This page is about the design approach I try and use when designing and building small spaces, approaching each space as a sculpture almost, using principles of what does a material do well at.

Below the main motor and live-in section in the foreground I built using a static caravan shell and the galvanised roof of a motorhome.it was originally the same as the butty in the background just an open workboat. I started to build the butty and make a workshop space with foldback batwing doors. the interior of the live in section can see hear being lined and insulated. the boats could be connected together and run as one long 72footer the motor pushing the butty connected by a h section beam and steel ratchet pullys.or separated and run as smaller independent craft.appart form the marine ply and insulation, all the materials were recycled or found, eg.the iron framework below came from a large roofrack from my van.
Boats Vans and other small space interiors
The Interiors of small spaces I like to redesign fit out and create. this was an LT 35 van I fitted out with a small woodburner and I lined the walls with wood and tiled the floor with wood. using bent branches as hangers and fitted a folding out single seat to double bed. this is a walk thru meaning has two entrances and I partially separated the two areas. the van was also designed to be used to carry and load so needed to be made to fit big eight by four ply sheets in or carry wood and tools. hence the fold down bed.
The interior of a canal boat narrowboat, wood floor and simple white and darkwood work effectively, I filled the space with minimal furniture an old rocking chair and a box. made a seat out of reclaimed mahogany wood wardrobe, reds and greens two colour theme. the floor I refitted with real wood as it had previously been replaced with laminate. sanding down or stipping the wood dores or small book case but leaving the darkwood sides and surrounds.
the interior of the boats and vans are designed with principles af being able too keep them clear easily, insulated properly and using recycled materials and wood where possible. .
below some images of in process of converting a friends live in vehicle.
Below the interior of long wheel base Mercedes 408. I used the hardwood floor tiles again as they are so easy to fit and create a good feel to the whole space, found the base is very important to a room space when small. and above right an LT35 high top
A greenhouse built for a friend, reused double glazed windows held together with brackets, total cost eight pounds and a bad back. (still standing) Even after floods.
